Knowledge is one thing; Understanding is another thing altogether.
Many of the answers are already in the room – it’s just a case of driving discussions in a way that helps to unearth them.
Whilst we we teach and learn concepts and knowledge that when put to use will add real value, there is always a need to put those concepts into context. This is more than mediating or ‘policing’ a discussion.
It is about helping a group to ensure it is applying what has been learnt in the way they communicate, hearing what hasn’t been said, understanding what has been said and making sure that the right questions are asked even though they might sound naive… (Indeed often the right questions are avoided because of the fear of sounding naive!).
This is about ensuring there is real understanding as to the application of that knowledge.
